About Coachella
Coachella is located in Riverside County, California. The city is 28 miles east of Palm Springs, 72 miles east of Riverside, and 130 miles east of Los Angeles. Coachella was established in 1876 being named at that time Woodspur. In 1901 the name of the city changed to "Coachella" after an Indian tribe.
Even if this small community is mainly rural and agricultural, it has the advantages of a big city. Coachella is also known as "City of Eternal Sunshine - Gateway to the Salton Sea".
Because of the large number of tourists, Coachella expanded its recreation and social venues. The city hosts a recreation center, a Boys and Girls Club center, and a boxing club in Bagdouma Park. Golf lovers can practice in one of Coachella's golf courses such as Vineyards Course and Desert Lakes.
Tourists can also enjoy the night life of Coachella either at Spotlight 29 Casino, at a dance club and at Corona Yacht Club (a 20-acre private estate designated for special events). In the 34 acres Bagdouma Park tourist can enjoy a lot of outdoors activities such as picnic, baseball/ softball, tennis, swimming, basketball and football.
A large percentage of Coachella's residents have Mexican origin, but are born and raised in Coachella. Thus Coachella has a Mexican American subculture, many events taking place in the city being Hispanic: Cinco de Mayo (May 5), the 16d Del Septembre Fiestas Patrias (Mexico's Independence from Spain) and the 12d de Decembre (the patron saint of Mexico: Santa Maria del Guadalupe) to celebrate the Virgin Mary.
